Obama pulls in $25 million, but look at the details

The delay in reporting did mean a banner result.

Of significant note, $23.5 million of his money is for the primary making it highly likely that he outraised Clinton for the primary.

Also, he had an eyepopping 100,000 donors which means there's alot of people out there who have already contributed but can still add more.

This is a wave.

(Later: I'll be really curious on the 15th to see the cash on hand numbers between Clinton and Obama. Clinton has been running a cash heavy, staff and consultant campaign. (My sense is that she's been "buying" some endorsements.) I have no sense about Obama's spending.)

  • I think Obama has the widest appeal which is obvious based on his fundraising but in the long run, mainstream America isn't ready for anyone other than a white guy in a suit.

  • Very, very impressive. HRC took her $26 million from 50,000 donors and Edwards took his $14 million from 37,000. Obama's numbers show broad support and a Deanesque Internet operation.

I've been critical of Obama in the past for his Lieberman-light talk criticizing fellow Dems. But he has drawn away from that kind of talk the last 6 months or so (which is good - Dems should NOT provide FOX News and the RNC with ammunition). As long as he stays away from that harmful triangulation bullshit, I am open to supporting him.

But frankly I am open to supporting any ABC (Anybody But Clinton) candidate for the Dem nomination. My feeling is that the only way the GOP holds the WH is if HRC is the nominee and gives the media and the GOP the chance to relive their glories from the 90's all over again (just witness how Chris Matthews gets all hot and bothered talking about Bill's indiscretions while he ignores Rudy's numerous documented infidelities...or Newt's...or Tom Delay's...)

  • Half his contributions came from netroots (internet sources), and 90% of those were <$100. Plenty of headroom to dip into that pool again and again.

This is truly impressive... This is a new paradigm in political campaigns/fund raising. (with all due respect to Dean.)

  • Sornie, I think that's still an open question. I think most of America is, but there is a segment who isn't.

I guess the question is, were those who can't handle a black president going to vote for him anyway?

If he wins the Dems and a big chunk of the independents, what the racist chunk does may not matter.

(Sadly, I think the presence of "black presidents" in the media, look at 24 for instance, really helps mainstream the idea.)

    ....

Reality, I'm still mixed on Obama. I really like him when I hear him speak, (I think he hypnotizes me) but the further I get from hearing him, the more measured my assessment.

The real issue for me is that he's really yet to take any hard positions. I'll be very curious to see if I still like him when I hear details.

And, I'm not gut level opposed to HRC. I will never be enthusiastic, but I sincerely believe she would be a very capable president, and I find solace in that.

As to whether her past will give the presidency to the Repubs. Maybe, but it depends on who the Repub nominee is. Whoever it is will be carrying some degree of the Bush legacy, too.

    ....

EPM, definitely the Dean model. (You know he must have that weird assed grin on him today.)

But, this method will only work for popular candidates who arouse passion. John McCain could never do something like this because he's become bland.

The Dean model has really enabled "outsider" candidates to get into the mainstream. It's not going to happen all that often, but I do find it somewhat hopedul that it is possible for a candidate to compete without relying wholly on the superrich.

And, the "headroom" is by far the biggest part of this story.

    This is big.

    Mike
