CNN reporting that Monica Goodling is "resigning"

I guess with it being Friday and the holiday, we should have expected something.

AP version. WaPo version. NYTimes version.

  • Pete Williams spun the news this way on Hardball: now that Goodling is no longer a member of the gov't, Dems don't have the right to demand she testify before the committees. Matthews wasn't buying: "That's one way to nuance it, " he said (I'm paraphrasing.)

Pete Williams, btw, is a former aide to Cheney.

  • I caught that segment. My eyes rolled so hard they almost fell out of my head.

And, I didn't know that about Pete Williams. I'm assuming in a previous administration.

  • She'll have to resign eventually. Chances are she's going to be under indictment and you can't have a justice official performing duties while indicted.

  • I find it interesting that she submitted a letter on Friday, made the announcement on Friday, but the actual resignation is dated Saturday.

She is big religious,Pat Robertson college and all.

Maybe she didn't want her career to end on Good Friday?

But it seems like the symbolism of that might be worth it, you know?

  • Yeah. I don't know how she perceives it, but it would seem that being taken down on good Friday might be good symbolism.

  • From Wiki:

"Prior to joining NBC, Williams served as a press official on Capitol Hill for many years. In 1986 he joined the Washington, DC staff of then Congressman Dick Cheney as press secretary and a legislative assistant. In 1989, when Cheney was named Secretary of Defense, Williams was appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. While in that position, Williams was named Government Communicator of the Year in 1991 by the National Association of Government Communicators."

Williams is also another closeted gay Republican. He was outed by a gay activist in 1991, though I don't think he's ever acknowledged that he is homosexual. If you ever hear him "report" about gay rights issues, it's quite clear he considers himself a Repub before he does a gay man (gay activists are always referred to as "liberal gay activists, fringe groups, etc.)

There should be a disclaimer beneath him every time he appears on camera.

  • Thanks, that's fascinating.

He wasn't just "an aide" he was more than that and obviously shared a relationship with Cheney.

    No, I don't mean that.
