Picture of the Day - 2

An Iraqi policeman runs for cover as an alleged sniper opens fire at people in central Baghdad. Gunmen have massacred 45 men in an overnight rampage in apparent revenge for bombings that killed 75 people in a mixed Iraqi town once hailed by President George W. Bush as a beacon hope.(AFP/Ali Yussef)

(And, I rarely say this, but go ahead and read down to the ITT story. There's alot today that's important and it won't take long.)

  • Another -epm hijack of your blog :)

I found this Pelosi quote buried in a CNN blurb. This should have been giving prime real estate.

"On this very important matter, I would extend a hand of friendship to the president to say to him, calm down with the threats," Pelosi told reporters on Capitol Hill. "There's a new Congress in town. We respect your constitutional role. We want you to respect ours.

"When the president says he wants to veto this bill he says, I am vetoing accountability - accountability of my own administration and of the Iraqi government," she added. "He says, I forbid. He told me, I forbid, I forbid accountability. I forbid additional assistance and meeting the health needs of our military and our veterans. I forbid meeting the needs of the people struck by Katrina. I forbid s-chip helping the poorest children in America get healthcare. I forbid disaster agriculture assistance to farmers and cattlemen across the country who need this help."

  • That would be an interesting hard spin.

(I also find the use of "forbid" interesting as it implies the assumption of a donminant role whether active or not.

    Her choice of words, right?)

  • Well, the words are Pelosi's, but I think they accurately describe Bush's attitude as displayed in recent public statements. We get front page coverage of Bush berating the Dems with words like "surrender" and "defeat" and "giving up," but the Speaker's rebuttal is buried in the low rent district.

I like the fact that Pelosi is pointing out all the things Bush is willing to turn his back on, just so he doesn't have to be held to an actual schedule for accomplishing the mission... whatever that is any more.

  • I saw it clipped on both Hardball (Shuster) and Countdown, and it was far more compelling than the placement I gave it.

If (probably when) I run across a clip I'll put it back up because the CNN post didn't do it justice.

It was a major tactical statement with serious impact.

  • Here's part of it. I'm still looking for a longer cut.

Check out her calm demeanor against Bush's near frantic speech today.

  • I don't have cable (or satellite) so I wouldn't know about cable coverage. I'm an old school antenna man.

  • Then check that Thinkprogress link.

Look at the way she handles it.
