Signing Statements run amok. Now, it's opening your mail.

The real problem with all these signing statements is that the only recourse is for Congress to sue the President which means a long resolution time and a serious game of political chicken.

In the meantime,
President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant, the Daily News has learned.

The President asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Bush then issued a "signing statement" that declared his right to open people's mail under emergency conditions.

That claim is contrary to existing law and contradicted the bill he had just signed, say experts who have reviewed it.

Let's start those investigations tomorrow, eh?

  • Signing statements run amok, indeed!

The man need to be politically gelded as soon as possible. He's a menace to a free society.

  • I think the best mechanism for that will be Congressional investigations if they can push through all the brick walls.

There will be enough shocking details coming out that it will completely neuter the President as they have to defend their actions.

    That's my hope, at least.

  • And, continuing our conversation about Carter and Ford, I assume you saw that Carter gave the last eulogy at the far lower profile Grand Rapids ceremony.

  • Re: Carter... Yes I saw that. I just find the Carter/Ford relationship more interesting -- more actual friendship -- than the collegial, so-called friendship between Bush, Sr. and Clinton.

I can imagine Ford and Carter playing a game of checkers at a hunting lodge somewhere and enjoying a lively discussion. But I don't see Bush Sr. and Clinton together unless its for a humanitarian junket where, oh by the way, they both get a little legacy polish at the same time.
