Picture of the Day - 3

Look at this picture carefully. This man is leaving the hospital. No bandages. Nothing.

  • American health care system at work? :)

  • I wrote a post a couple weeks ago that the US should put Iraqi medical care near the top as part of any new plan.

Very rarely are the conditions of the Iraqi hospitals discussed. They don't even have the basics, bandages, antibacterials, painkillers.

Many more people are dying than make the reported numbers.

And, relatively cheaply compared to everything else in Iraq, that part of Iraqi life could be fixed.

  • What they need to do is stop focusing on building large costly hospitals that serve only the larger cities and fund the construction of smaller clinics that could provide health care to Iraqis throughout the entire country.

  • I don't even think that construction is that much of the immediate answer. It's needed, but in the short term, with the security situation the way it is, the most effective thing to do would be to flood the country with truckloads of cheap medical supplies, bandages, antibiotics, painkillers, plasma/blood. Those damn Iraqi doctors are staying at work despite the threats to their lives, despite, a lack of supplies.

They are what we should be supporting in Iraq.

You could drop an 18 wheeler of supplies at every hospital. If the local insurgents destroy them, they lose local support. If someone from outside tries, send another truck.

I think one of the keys to this hearts and minds thing is to protect the children and noncombatant civilizans.
