More media crit

Web front page, big type "Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro Euthanized": (NYTimes, WaPo, AP, Reuters.)

Buried down in the bottom paragraphs of stories on Najaf, "The U.S. military announced the deaths of three U.S. service members Saturday." (NYTimes - 25th paragraph, WaPo - 21st paragraph)

A goddamned horse.

  • And they kept that poor damned animal alive just because he's a million dollar sperm bank. Just another excess of capitalism that pushes humanity and compassion to the brink just to turn a buck.

  • It was unlikely Barbaro would have ever sired a foal. Possible, but unlikely. Even if his leg(s) did heal, I'm not sure he'd ever be strong enough for mate (it's a fairly violent act with a lot of stress on the hind legs). I don't think it was greed that motivated the owners.

Regarding the news: Mike, since when is it "news" that American servicemen die in Iraq. It's as predictable as the weather in LA....

  • Until after the Preakness the stud fees were climbing higher and higher. NPR even did a report on how much that horse would make. The vets completely abrogated their responsibility to treat the horse in a humane and just manner.

  • I have no idea about all this. I know nothing about horse racing, the relative importance of this horse, the medical situation, etc.

I was simply struck with disgust at the decision of what is news, of what is important.

Barbaro's family won't be looking at an empty chair at every holiday for years. They won't run across a bottle opener in 2009 and break down into tears.

  • Sorry, Mike my rant about Money complete obscured your original point.

Hopefully Britney Spear's doesn't get pregnant anytime soon or Iraq will be off the front page for a month.
