  • Interesting Ford funeral note. After the state funeral, Ford's body was flown to Grand Rapids for a private burial ceremony. On board the plan accomanying the president's casket was his family.... and President Jimmy Carter.

Carter, it seems, had become a true and genuine friend of President Ford, dispite their "battle" in the 1976 presidential race. Interestingly, President Carter didn't speak at the state funeral. I wonder why. I wonder if he wasn't asked, or if he chose to pay his respects privately... with the family.

  • "You know what to do at a funeral, right?" - or -

"This surge thing is a really bad idea."

EPM, No, I wasn't aware of a Carter Ford relationship, but it doesn't really surprise me too much.

Look at the Bush Sr./Clinton friendship. I think the bottom line is that all of these guys shared a broad realist understanding even if they somewhat disagreed on policy..

That's why the two idealists Reagan and Bush Jr. are out of the friendship group.

  • Mike,

What I found interesting was the humility of Carter regarding his friendship. He did not grandstand and make speeches; he quietly mourned with the family.

(you can tell I'm a Carter fan, right :) )

  • Nothing wrong with being a Carter fan.

And, I think that's more his nature.

  • More like, "Dad, can I go winkie-tink now, or do I have to wait till they take that big box away?"
