Pentagon considering overseas recruitment centers
Holy cow!
This might be something that was written up as a proposal with no likelihood of implementation, but I still think it captures the larger problem of an overextended and broken military.
The armed forces, already struggling to meet recruiting goals, are considering expanding the number of noncitizens in the ranks -- including disputed proposals to open recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to US citizenship if they volunteer -- according to Pentagon officials.

Shocking, isn't it? Add this to the huge numbers of contractors in Iraq, and you get a good sense of how fast the America we learned about in school is slipping away from us.

Good point about the contractors, the same thing, more or less laundered through an independent company.
And, again, I have a hunch this is just one proposal point in a much bigger discussion, but it's still telling that it's even being discussed.
During the cold war, such a thing would never be contemplated.
