Just how is Condi Rice, already ineffectual and overwhelmed by Iran and North Korea, supposed to launch this major regional diplomatic mission without a Deputy since July, and soon to be without a Counselor or UN ambassador?
Her head's barely above water and we're expecting her to negotiate a regional middle east peace?
Also, with McCain's 20,000 more troops to Iraq DOA at the ISG (WaPo,) how does his Iraq position look going into '08? This panel of experts has summarily said that he was horribly wrong.

That's the question.
That's why he took that position. He thought that such an increase would never happen so it allowed him to look tough with no test.
I just found myself wondering whether he will look hopelessly out of touch with the situation in 6 to 12 months.

I think he went "out of touch" when the Maverick went to Liberty University. Maybe he's taking a page out of Hilary's playbook: lose the primary to win the general election.

If he is promoting something that everyone knows is DOA, how does that make him strong? To me it makes him calculating and desperate. I also wonder about the longetvity of someone who has had such a battle with melanoma.

Copy, I trace it way back to the 2004 campaign when instead of defending "his friend" Kerry against the Swiftboaters, he went on the campaign trail with Bush. (You may remember that uncomfortable hug picture.) To me, that's when he put on the kneepads and agreed to take whatever they gave him.

Ptelea, The theory is that he doesn't have to backtrack on his earlier Iraq support, and when asked he can say, "well, Iraq was lost because they weren't as strong for the policy as I was."
I've always questioned that theory against the general electorate that is overwhelmingly against Iraq, but to the 30 % who still support Bush and will vote in the primaries, it offers them a way out, too.

Please, Condi couldn't negotiate her way out of a paper bag, and that's with a deputy, a UN ambassador to do her dirty work, AND a somewhat useful boss. She can point fingers, though. they all seem to be really good at that.
