Is Bush the worst President? The WaPo debates
With Bush's approval mired in the 30's, I guess this isn't too surprising, but how do you think the Bush administration feels about the WaPo turning over its B01 Outlook frontpage to historians discussing whether Bush is the worst president ever?
Move over Hoover - Douglas Brinkley
He's only the fifth worst - Michael Lind
He's the worst ever - Michael Foner
Time's on his side - Vincent Cannato
(There's even a Monday online chat.)
I find this particularly sharp because of Bush's increasing reliance on the perspective of "future historians" to defend his failures.
(As Washington sits down with its paper, will this question penetrate onto the morning shows?)

His decision to invade Iraq will have negative effects for 50-100 years.
His decisions (esp. exceutive orders) will be found unconstitutional.
He will be judged as a President who did not stand by hi oath - to defend the Constitution.
He's unpopular now, but he will be more unpopular in the future. Historians will rate him worse with every year that passes.
If he lives to be as old as his dad, he will have to live with that unpopularity. Most Presidents are dead by the time the Historians declare them one of the worst Presidents.
I doubt Bush can redeem himself, as Jimmy Carter has been able to. I am biased, I have already judged him to be the worst President.

Nope. Worst. Sorry. Iamgine what the entire region around iraq is going to be like in, say, ten years.
That'll clinch it.

Time, it's funny. I have the same sense that it's the battles over executive power that may be the main historical reference a hundred years from now, the way we discuss the Sedition act of Wilson or some of Lincoln's actions.
Also, I think his popularity will probably hit a low 20-40 years out, but that's hard toproject because alot of things may change.
And I agree that redemption will probably be out of the question because of the polarizing presidency. Carter's redemption has come because he took on a role as a active centrist working for an agreed upon sense of common good. Although I think it's redeemed him, not his presidency.
And I just don't see Bush dedicating himself to the sort of selfless service.
.....
Dave, I'm always hesitant to throw around an absolute on this simply because my history is not as firm as it should be, but I'm certainly willing to go very, very bad.
