I wish someone would just say it
The Saudis are backing the Iraqi Sunni insurgency.
This AP piece approaches it very backhandedly,
The reality is that by tragically converting Iraq from a secular state to a Shia dominated state, the US has altered the long term balance in the middle east. Iraq was the counterbalance to Iran, and now that it is gone, the Saudis have to take up that role.
Again, the failures are far bigger than just Iraq.

As I was reading this, I could not help but think of the old Star Trek series and how we have failed to follow the Prime Directive! Just a thought. It doesn't fit exactly but any 'good intentions' seem to be having major repercussions.
