“I must tell you, I'm sleeping a lot better than people would assume,” he said.

I don't know why this seems so shocking to me. Maybe it's the callousness. Maybe it's the tin ear. Maybe it's the cockiness.
It just seems so wrong.

It seems wrong because it IS wrong. A normal, emotionally developed human being wouldn't sleep well and certainly wouldn't make a statement like this. It's startling to me because it's such a from-the-horse's-mouth admission that the man is emotionally unbalanced.
Human suffering just doesn't register with the man.
