Bush: My daughters are serving America.
Unbelievable. (From the People interview.)
I guess Bush's dad covered for his screw up kid....
BUT, further down in the interview,
I guess they've already finished "their service" to our country. They both graduated in May 2004.
This year, we invited readers on our Web site to ask you questions. Here's one:
Nina Frazier of New Braunfels, Texas, asks: If you believe in the war, why didn't you encourage your own daughters to fight for your country? Or did you?
THE PRESIDENT: I believe Americans can contribute to the security and well-being of our country in a variety of ways. That's why we have a volunteer army. What we say to young people is that if you want to serve your country you can do so in the military, or you can do so by teaching children in inner-city Washington, D.C., like one of our daughters did. Or you can help form education programs in New York City, like our (other) daughter. There are all kinds of ways to serve.
I guess Bush's dad covered for his screw up kid....
BUT, further down in the interview,
Are your daughters coming home for Christmas?
Mrs. Bush: They are. Jenna is working with an international organization in Central and South America about education policy. And Barbara is working for a museum in the education department.
I guess they've already finished "their service" to our country. They both graduated in May 2004.

I honestly don't understand why there is this great backlash against the Bush daughters. There's the whole "oh he's asking the sons and daughters of others to go fight, why shouldnt he send his own." But it's not really his decision is it? If the girls don't want to go die for their father's mistakes, why should they be forced to. Just saying is all.

Sumo, It's the Paris Hilton nature of Jenna's life that gets me most.
Matt, I think you're right.
However, it resonates because of his occasional appearance of callousness to the suffering of others. The sense is, maybe he'd feel it if he had his own skin in the game.
And, frankly, if they were in the military, the worst possible thing would be for them to be in Iraq. They would be constant targets, and unless they were satisfied with being bait, they would cause far more problems.

While the sins of the father should not be heaped upon the daughters, if the daughters wallow in the privilige of the father then they take on there own sin.
My problem isn't that the Bush Twins haven't enlisted in the Army, it's that they live freely off the achievments of others, act as if it's thier birthright, and give back nothing -- save a requisite internship -- to the national fabric. George and his progeny are the puff pastry of patriotism: there is a great presentation, but inside there is not substance... just air.
There was once a concept, a moral contract, that to those whom much is given, much is expected. In modern America that has been turned on it's head: to those whom much is given, good for them. Sucks to be you.

I think that's why this struck me. I've never really gon into the "Bush twins shouldf go to Iraq thing because I agree with Matteo above. No matter who their father is, it is their choice.
BUT
Don't try to tell me that they've done "their service" to our country by serving on the organizing commitees of fundraising balls. That's not quite the same as Iraq.
So, their choice, but stop trying to tell me how noble they are saving Texas from the air force of the Viet Cong. Ya know?

I couldn't add anything to your last post, Mike.
