Bush meets with terrorist

As Bush meets with Al Hakim today, I am simply astonished at the downplaying of the fact that Al Hakim is, at the very least, nominally in charge of the 25,000 strong, Iranian trained and supplied, Badr Corps, SCIRI's militia.

The accounts of militia infiltration of the Iraqi police, most of the killings in police uniform, and almost all the atrocities committed under the Interior Ministry are directly tied to Badr. Badr has engaged in hostilities against US troops.

Certainly, the goal of this meeting is to try to counterbalance Sadr, which frankly is part of the right course, but the near total blindspot to Al Hakim's ties to militia violence in the media is truly astounding.

(Bolton's headline stealing resignation couldn't have come on a better day, eh?)

  • The blackout is amazing to me.

One of the main reasons the Iraqi forces aren't ready is the infiltration which was spearheaded by Hakim as a long term strategy.

  • It is very sad that this is one of our better options (there are absolutely no good options)? Isn't this like striking a deal with the devil?

  • As options dwindle and disappear the choices become less and less attractive.

  • You know, I really don't mind dealing with this guy. It's the right move at this point. (Haven't said that too often.) Although I do wonder about a presidential meeting. Hakim is a shrewd political operator and would have understood dealing with underlings, so I doubt he required this meeting. So, was it an effort to give him stature against Sadr(meeting with Bush could easily be seen as collaboration) or was it so the President could "look into his eyes"?

  • SCIRI has thrown itself in with the US occupation, virtually from day one. Therefore they merit recognition as "moderates". (I wonder if this hasn't fuelled support for the wilier and more consistently anti-occupation Sadrists.)
