Yeah, sorry. A little more graphic than I normally go, but I don't know how else to express the brutality of gunmen walking in and killing everyone in a store. And this is the type of attack that is now happening frequently enough that they don't really get reported, just mentioned in a paragraph or two down an article on another topic.
I think I was trying to create shock to point out the absolutely brutal acts that happen in Iraq every day without much mention.

I just don't get why they do this to their own people....what do they have to gain by it?

They don't see themselves as one people.
I remember seeing some "expert" ask, "why won't the Iraqis fight for their country?"
But that's the core misunderstanding. They do believe that they are fighting for their country. That's what a civil war is.
