Picture of the Day - 2

U.S. President George W. Bush, left, is seated beneath a large bust of revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh.... at the Communist Party Headquarters in Hanoi, Vietnam, Nov. 17, 2006. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

"A baby boomer who came of age during the turbulent Vietnam era and spent the war stateside as a member of the Texas Air National Guard, the president called himself amazed by the sights of the onetime war capital."

  • Bush continues to embarrass America abroad by opening his mouth with more tortured analogies.

Bush essentialy told his hosts that the US could have whooped their asses, but we decided to "quit." What and asshole. What an embarrassment...

What a dangerous, dangerous man to have so much power.

  • That's how I read it, too.

Of course, the insult would have a lot more punch if they hadn't won.

  • My God, I cannot believe he allowed himself in the same room as that statue. What on earth were they thinking? Obviously, not much.

  • The Vietnamese staged the setting specifically for Bush. They did not do this in-your-face stuff with Clinton.

And Bush, rather than being bigger man, continues to do and say things that justify his hosts contempt, rather than respect.

I retract this. The giant Ho Chi Minh statue was, indeed, a back drop to the official handshaking ceremony during Clinton's visit.

  • Copy, I don't know what they were thinking. I guess the alternatives would've been to skip the conference which was not really tenable, or have a major diplomatic row and get blasted by the Asians for three days.

    ....

EPM, maybe Clinton received the same treatment, but this is intentional treatment.

I find the "We could've won Vietnam" comments simply unfathomable.

  • That, and the comment that "we" could've won Vietnam if "we" had stuck to it.

Who is this "we", Mr. Air National Guard.

  • Bush looks like he's afraid the bust will fall on his head. This is not a picture of a world leader at ease.

Bad for American in a way to have lost so much face in the international arena but isn't it great to see that smirk wiped off his face?

  • Yes, and yes.
