McCain and Giulianai dancing at the Republican wake

In the wake of the Republicans' dispiriting election loss, both McCain and Giuliani declare their intention to run for president. I would guess the thinking in both camps is that they can take the dissatisfaction over the election and spin it to a more centrist direction/candidate.

I would expect a snap back from this centrist theory at some point a couple months into the Democrats reign when the crazy right candidates will step out. (But who?)

That's when we will really see the intra-Republican war.

(Although the 2006 election marks the starting point for this, its preconditions were set by Rove's abandonment of Reagan's big tent in favor of his divisive social issue "base" politics.

Everyone say "Thank you, Karl.")

  • Rove is a one trick pony. He's like a scam artist who's spent too much time in the same town. Eventually the pigeons catch on and the game's over.

  • Thank you Karl!!!! I love when the mistique wears off and everyone sees through the guise.

The problem Giuliani and McCain both have is trying to distance themselves from GWB without appearing disloyal. This is a tough tight-rope to walk, and nothing but alligators below.

Giuliani could play up his bravery on 9/11 (while Bush hid in a bunker) but then he appears to be taking shots at the president.

The GOP primary in '08 is going to be so much fun, I can hardly wait!

  • EPM, very well said.

Although I don't think they've all caught on yet. I think they're now at the awakening "Now wait just a minute..." point.

    ....

Praguetwin,Add to that that McCain is hated by the Evangelicals, so any statement will immediately be looked at as questionably loyal.

And, Giuliani is pro abortion, been divorced(very ugly), had an affair, married her. He's got a whole bunch of Evangelical targets on him if anybpdy wants to go after him.

Yet, I don't think there's any evangelical candidate out there yet who can win a general election.

It is going to be fun viewing.

  • What about Hagel? Word on the stree is he can't make it through a primary, but considering what is out there, maybe he has a chance.

  • Problem is that he's come into conflict with the White House on a number of occasions.

Doesn't rule him out, but he would be running without the party machine. He'd have to have the evangelical machine running for him.

Gingrich is a possibility believe it or not. I just don't know at this point.

I think the bottom line is that there's not any significant unity candidates. Because whatever you say about Bush, he did tie toghether the business side and evangelical side which isn't all that easy.
