'08

I don't want to get too far into '08 yet, but an observation. Six months ago, I looked around the presidential field and thought Hillary Clinton, then who. Now, I'd be reasonably happy with any of the top polling four.
New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton 33%
Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 15%
Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards 14%
Former Vice President Al Gore 14%

After that, not so much. Kerry, Clark, Biden, Richardson, Bayh, Vilsack.

And, while we're playing in '08,
Some of Rudy Giuliani's fiercest city critics are set to launch "swift boat"-type strikes to inform voters around the nation about the former mayor's behavior before 9/11, The (NY)Post has learned.

So, by the time the general election rolls around, it'll be those four Dems against "kneepads" McCain, a swiftboated Rudy, or Mitt Romney?

  • Gore won't make it, Rudy won't make it.

Did you here Newt is running? He won't make it either.

I could vote for Biden, yes he's a blowhard.

I can't vote for Clinton or McCain, if that's my choice I will go see a movie on election day.

  • I think Newt's actually got a shot because despite the affair and divorce and all that, he has conservative credentials.

And, I would agree that the Gore window has closed/will close soon.

And, I also have a soft spot for Biden. He has this weird charm that sucks me in from time to time, although I think in a national campaign, he's bound to say too many things that can be taken out of context. He likes to talk too much and that would get him in trouble.

And, I could vote for Clinton. I consider her eminently qualified, although I don't have a personal affinity. There's some distance I can't explain.

And, never again McCain. I'm one of those burned McCain supporters, and watching him cozy up to Bush and now contradict himself to try to get the right. Never again.

  • Remember back in '92 when Clinton (Mr.) kind of came out of nowhere because he looked good at the debates?

I suspect something like that will happen in '08..... at least I hope.

  • And Edwards came out of nowhere in '04.

HRC has such high negatives and I so distrust the whole Clinton apparatus that I hope she is NOT the nominee. I knw this heresy, but if she were to be the nominee, I wouldn't vote for her. I didn't vote for her for Senator and I won't vote for her as president. I'm sick of the Clintons, just like I'm sick of the Bushes.

I bet a lot of Americans on both the right and left feel similarly.

  • I'll support Mitt, as long as he don't let them queers get married. That's issue #1 for me.

  • Praguetwin. That was a very open field of 8 with no standout frontrunner. (I was pulling for Tsongas.)

If I'm betting, I think it's Obama or Edwards who makes the push. I don't see any of the others having enough charisma to push through the fundraising advantage. Obama will have money, Edwards campaigns pretty well. Maybe Biden can sweet talk his way into it.
    .....

Reality, True, but he never really got beyond secondary choice. It's so hard to raise the money as an outsider, and you need money to prove to the media that you're a serious candidate. Low money candidates get covered tongue in cheek. (I know that's garbage, but it's true.)

And, I'm not crazy about Clinton, there's something off putting. BUT, I console myself by thinking that she's more than capable. She's smart, she's been vetted about as hard as anyone ever has been, she knows Washington, and has solid people she could tap.

That being said, she's offputting and I don't think she could win the general because of past baggage unless there's a really damaged Repub candidate.

    ....

Ripper, It's a race to the Conservative bottom on the right right now, isn't it? MCCain backtracking on abortion. Giulianai trying to say he's always been a bedrock conservative, and Romney hunting gays.

Rove's emphasis of the religious right has created some pretty ridiculous hoops they have to jump through.

  • Good point about '92. If you take Clinton out of the picture, you have a similar situation though.

Problem is, well, there she is.

The baggage will be a big problem for her in the general assuming she gets that far.

With Clinton (Mr.), I remember seeing him at an early debate with the other 7 and after one sentance I said, "that is the next president."

  • I really think that Hillary baggage will be an issue in the primaries. Not as much as a general election, but there are many, many Dems who are uncomfortable with her leaving a big opening for somebody else.

And, I remember '92 well. I was in college at the time and a bunch of friends and I watched the debates as a drinking game. And, I remember that debate moment as well.
