This is ethnic cleansing

As the death toll passes 100 around Balad, I want to point out again that Sadr's militia was called in by local politicians and leaders specifically to do this:
Sunni Muslims were fleeing across the Tigris River on Monday, trying to escape a four-day rampage of sectarian fighting in their Shiite-dominated home city north of Baghdad. At least 91 people have died — all but 17 of them Sunnis.

Sunnis, a minority in the city of Balad, said militiamen had been going door to door, giving them two hours to clear out of their homes, and one police officer said the bodies of the city's Sunni minority lay unclaimed in the streets.

The government and its police and armed forces appeared unable or unwilling to stop the bloodshed in Balad.....

  • That's the term I applied to it as well.

  • Ethnic cleansing has been going on for some time especially in Baghdad, but not before have we seen such a clear territorial divide and unanimity of story.

Militia were brought in for specific purpose. Nobody on either side is even denying it.

  • Oh yes, there was always an element of ethnic cleansing since February. Now, it's much more deliberate. I recall reading about stock piles of weapons in Baghdad for when it really gets grotesque. I don't think the operations in Baghdad have picked up anywhere near enough weapons.

I saw that story on Saddam today. Not sure what to make of it. He may be trying to appear as a leading figure. I still think he will get sprung before this is all said and done. He would be a valuable boogeyman for the Shiite.

  • No, not at all. The last numbers I saw on Together Forward were through September and it was something like 1,200 weapons. That's nothing.

I figure Saddam is trying to redeem himself in the public eye somehow, but I don't know. Just weird.

(And his sentencing, I think, is the day before the US election.)
