Foley scandal to "widen a little bit?"
A very cryptic mention of the Foley investigation by Chip Reid leaves more questions than answers. "The Mark Foley scandal investigation is going to widen a little bit."
Kolbe? The allegations around Weller's page? More coverup?
And will it be this week before the election?

Given the media's queasiness with appearing "biased" against conservatives, I doubt any media outlet will break a new angle in the Foley scandal so close to the election.
Pat Buchanan, btw, said something similar to what Chip Reid said on MSNBC yesterday morning too, so I could be wrong about the media breaking something in the Foley scandal. But I just have to believe that the wingers attacks on the Old Media lately will guarantee that nothing damaging to Repubs breaks until after November 7.

I think it depends alot on what it is. If there's a second congressman clearly across the line I think they report it, (with a newsman's zeal,) because that's a huge story. That's front pages, that's big.
But if it's less than that, I just don't know.
I think you're right, the politics will bind up caution, but at the same time I think that if they're sure, it makes print.

The Oregonian knew Senator Bob Packwood was attacking women in elevators and held the story BEFORE the election because they didn't want to seem like they were biased. In fact, the Wash Post wound up breaking the story instead because the Oregonian waited so long. I've never been able to forget that, and it always makes me wonder what these guys in the press know and what they're not telling us about the goings on in Washington.
BTW, I hope I'm wrong.

I think there are two parts to this. One, which secrets are right to reveal. For instance, certainly the WaPo knows who is gay and yet they don't out them.
But two, I think alot of it is how sure they are of the story. I understand how carefully some of this is handled. I would not want to break a story like Foley and then end up being wrong.
Also, I think depends on who has the information. For instance Lewinsky was "broken" by Drudge because it was given to him by Repub operatives. If somebody really wants a story out there, they can find a less serious medium to legitimate the story.
I'm also curious about the phrase "widen a little bit." Does that denote something as big as Kolbe or just more evidence of Foley like having sex with a page?
