The back door out of Iraq

Your morality can't keep you out of Iraq, but shooting yourself in the financial foot can.
Thousands of U.S. troops are being barred from overseas duty because they are so deep in debt they are considered security risks, according to an Associated Press review of military records.

  • I think there is a strong connection between desperation and uncontrolled personal spending so it may not be premeditated

  • I'b buy that. I think they make that point in the article.

Less beautifully than you wrote it, if I were due to ship out to Iraq, I think I might squander some money on "one last time."

  • The best solution is to stay out of the military in the first place. Back in the old "Nam draft recruitment days, the trick was to drink a bottle of soy sauce to raise the blood pressure just before the Army medical exam.

  • Agreed, but they aren't letting some people leave.

Soy sauce, ha. That isn't a bad trick.

  • An old friend of mine was in the Special Forces for 2 1/2 years. Somehow, miraculously, those were 2 1/2 years in the 90s that were relatively peaceful, and he never saw combat.

He still blew his check from the Army every month, and wound up in massive debt.

  • Yeah. It could be argued that a certain segment of the military, especially spec forces/frontline, are more prone to risk.

    Good contribution, thanks.
