Picture of the Day - 3

Forever in our Hearts...

September 11, 2001.

(And Bush makes a speech standing right on it.)

"Showing respect for the flag shows reverence for American ideals." George W. Bush -
From the National Flag Foundation website.

(I had to check this out before I posted. The second two pictures I found uncredited, so I hunted down the first which is authentic Reuters/Jason Reed. So, I have every reason to believe the second two are real as well.)

  • The constitution has been swept under that rug.

  • Heh.

He's standing on the flag. Remember how crazy the right wingers went when it was shown that Saddam had a US flag on the ground so people would have to walk on it.

  • Phew! Good thing that flag desecration amendment didn't pass. Oh, wait. That would've just affected the constitution, which as we know Republicans have taken an oath to "pervert and destroy."

  • Reminds me of the story about Barbara Bush embroidering GHW Bush's political enemies faces on rugs for him to step on........

  • This rug had to be made in another country. What American would put the flag on the run for people to walk on it?

  • The odd thing to me is that it was apparently put there for him to stand on. It was his "mark."

Look at the scene. It's the only think in the whole area, set set diagonally towards the preset camera positions. By standing on that mark, he frames the two flaming towers over his right shoulder. This was an intentional act.

And, frankly, I don't just have a problem with him standing on the flag (although I do,)I have a problem with him standing on a memorial, however informal, to those lost.

I think it's that it acts as a broad metaphor for the way this administration has used those people and their horrific deaths for their own ends.

I think that's the disrespect that bothers me more.

  • If they didn't want it stepped on, what's it doing on the ground? This is crazy.

    Great catch.
