Picture of the Day - 2

A U.S. soldier checks the body of a soldier killed in a suicide car bomb blast outside Friday the U.S. embassy in Kabul.

From the horrible story on the Kabul bombing that killed "at least 16 people, including two American soldiers."

(Notably, this is the first picture I've ever seen in a US major of a US soldier who was killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.)

  • I'm wondering if the person checking the deceased is a merc. His kit just doesn't seem to be GI.

  • Yeah, I've been looking at the clothing, too. The caption doesn't clearly say it's a US soldier, but that's what I think.

Also, I agree with your question. It could be a merc or it could've been somebody off duty, up the chain or on medical staff.

I was just working from the caption supplied by AFP. (That's the caption at right in italics.)

  • Dead body is a dead body. Doesn't matter if you're black, brown, white, eat at KFC or bow to snakes. Dead is dead. I'm not sure I understand why the "obsession" with dead American soldiers.

I recall watching the docu on Mogadishu, when there was an "outrage" when they filmed and showed the footage of rough neck tactics with captured and/or dead soldiers.

  • Yeah, I agree, but within the framework of major American media, this picture is somewhat groundbreaking. I've seen a fair number of dead US soldiers on foreign news sites.

Notice though that they were still extremely cautious in the display. No blood, no face, no identifying features.

And you don't have to go back to Mogadishu, remember that the massive failed Fallujah destruction was spawned after Bush felt the US needed some retribution after those four mercs were killed. (Remember those horrible pictures of the burned bodies hanging on the bridge?)

America went ballistic, although it's now been forgotten.
