The fact that it happened a month ago, and was being supressed leads me to believe they were sitting on the story until Bin Laden could be "captured" by US and Paki forces (dead, of course) as part of Rove's promised "October surprise". It wasn't until after August 23 that Bush renewed his focus on Osama, and the timing of this with the visit by Musharraff seems a bit too convenient to me.
I always assumed they would just kill some big tall saudi dude on dialysis and claim its him right before the election, then say "Oops, DNA tests say no" on November 9th.
I'm being part snarky, but only in part. I'm sure the October Surprises will be almost as subtle as that.
Lew, I was thinking about that this morning. This story magically appearing during Musharraf's visit. A Bin Laden dead of natural causes is the best possible outcome for Musharraf.
Reality based, yeah, I would expect any surprise to be shameless. It's their way.
Generally, I'm really suspicious of the Saudi origin of the intel. Their past relationship with the Bush clan makes me question anything involving them, and there's no loss for them in this.
My guess again is that they are trying to draw him out to release another tape. My first thought is that they were doing this to try and catch him, but after chewing on it awhile, the cynical political side of me says that the admin benefits if they can just get the release of another tape before the election.
A Bin Laden tape a week before the election could be significant. (Not that the Republicans would ever do anything like that.)
This is not the America I was brought up to believe in.
This blog seeks to highlight abuse of power, deception, corruption, and just plain bad ideas in government and corporations.

My tin foil hat also smells something funky.
