Iraqi civil war has already begun, U.S. troops say
If you didn't see this excellent piece by Tom Lasseter, give it a read. It describes, from the US soldier's point of view, some of what's going on on the ground in the streets of Iraq. Streets acting as boundaries (front lines) betweeen the Sunni and Shia and shelling and raids across those boundaries.
Efforts to "purify" the various neighborhoods, and a stark pessimism among the lower ranks.

Horrible. "Iraq is now caught in hell" is exactly right.
But we can't blame Bush for this. According to a former US ambassador, Bush had no idea there were even different sects in Iraq. (Raw Story)

Yeah, I saw that. My gut says to believe it, but I don't know Galbraith.
That item seems to be the lead item that he's marketing his book with.

According to the dictionary definition of civil war; civil war has been going on in Iraq for a long time.
Either way the fighting is beyond our control.
So now what do we do Mr. President?

Yeah. The choices are pretty much get all the way in, or get out.
The problem for Bush is that either change represents and admission of failure either in not having enough troops from the beginning or that the whole project was flawed from the beginning.
So US soldiers and Iraqis will die while the administration tries to find a solution which works for them politically. (They assume one exists.)
