I know what you are saying, and the bucket deserves to be dumped. But I also feel for ordinary Americans who feel that shame, and in an odd way, share it.
The baddies shouldn't be allowed to blacken everyone else.
The icon? It just goes with my life and mood at the moment.

True enough cartledge. We do all share in the shame. It's our government perpetrating these atrocities, either directly or by proxy and worse, all too many Americans support this madness.
Unfortunately, there's not much we can do but hope to turn things around in November. I'm afraid it may turn out to be a fool's hope.

Cartledge, Frankly, this is what happens in an extended insurgent war. It happens in every one. French in Algeria, US in Vietnam, Russians in Afghan.
That's not an excuse at all, it's just never mentioned in the "clean vision" promoted before the war. When decisions are made to go to war, the decision is made to have this happen.
My point is that it does blacken us all, and to some degree, we share in the repsponsibility.
Libby, don't get too disheartened about Nov. yet. We're a long way away, and alot's still going to happen. Odds are, most of it good for Dem prospects.

Mike, I agree. The increase in real news coverage makes it more graphic.
I'm trying to balance those feelings of shame to and from citizens of countries who are powerless to stop these adventures in the first place.
But we do and will feel shame, I just loath it when I here, for example, "Those American &^#+&!" Like all Americans are douing this, or all Brits or Australians or Muslims for that matter.
I guess I car too much about individuals and bnot enough about organisational structures which commit acts in their names.

Yeah. From reading you, I have this creeping hunch that you don't agree with everything done by the Australian government. I don't know where I got that idea....
And blaming an entire group is a very common thing that goes beyond countries. It's just a simple way of thinking.
