You know I don't believe in coincidences

After facing accusations that the US and Israel want the violence in Lebanon to continue, is it just coincidence that within hours of Condi Rice proposing this,
BEIRUT—A U.S. ceasefire plan calls for an international peacekeeping force to be posted initially in Lebanon's war-ravaged south and later extended throughout the country to disarm the Hezbollah militia, a Lebanese government source says.

This took place?
JERUSALEM (AP) - A United Nations-run observation post just inside Israel was struck during fighting between Israel and Hezbollah militants on Friday. The army blamed Hezbollah rockets but a UN officer said it was an artillery shell fired by the Israeli Defence Force.

There was already some speculation that filling out a multinational force was going to be difficult, but this action by the Israelis will delay any such force, and a peace settlement, even further.

(CNN: Lebanese sources say that it was an airstrike and 4 UN observer troops have been killed.)

Also, FoxNews "The United States has given Israeli forces between 10 and 14 days to finish dealing Hezbollah "a strategic blow."

UPDATE: (AFP) Kofi Annan expressed shock at the "apparently deliberate targeting," while Israeli Ambassador Gillerman accused Anan of making "premature and erroneous assertions".

  • And, the Israelis have said they aren't leaving southern Lebanon until a multinational peacekeeping force is in place.

Funny how things work out, isn't it.

  • But they're not going to occupy it. Right? Right?

  • Plus now Bush gives them another two weeks. Unbelieveable. But not really.

  • Yeah. At this critical point in the broader relationship with the Arab world, the administration is nudging them to hate us. Hezbullah could be a small problem compared to what we're creating.

  • But if you're in a tinfoil hat frame of mind, another 9/11 type attack on the US might just be enough to cause all of those dodos who seem to believe again that Iraq had WMDs when we went in there to vote Republican again. Hell, there might even be some way of bastardizing the laws even further and having Chimpy remain in office as long as there's a threat to national security. God knows he's messed around with, circumvented and downright broken so many established laws and directives already.

That's been running through my head all day. Do you think that's a possibility?

  • They'll send in settlers and organize another "security buffer zone".

  • Rachie, I agree. With the angst in the country right now, a significant event could certainly massively and rapidly shift opinion although I wouldn't venture to guess how.

It's been one of the great ironies of the Bush presidency that the foreign policy crises he has created have often led to greater support. I don't know to what degree that still holds true. If there were a terror attack, would Americans rally around Bush? Or would they turn on him? Hopefully the question is never tested.

And as for delaying elections or something like that, we're too far away from that potentiality. There was alot of talk about that in 2004, but again, thankfully the premise wasn't tested. On a sheerly theoretical basis, I don't know. It would take a massive shift, and probably a more popular president. Roosevelt was in office forever, but he was incredibly popular.

Romunov, the news this morning is that they Israelis are dipping their toe in the water and saying that they will occupy a "small strip." I don't know about settlers because they would have to protect them, but a "security buffer zone" does seem to be in the near term cards.
