Anonymous Republican complains about Bush
I found this fascinating. A Republican Senate candidate holds a luncheon briefing for 9 reporters and blasts Bush but insists that his name be held back.
Do you really think his identity is going to stay confidential after this? So, he gets on the record criticizing Bush to his voters, but tries to maintain deniability to the White House and leadership.
This is desperate and a sign of things to come.

DeWine or Chafee. At times it sounds like Chafee to me (especially w/ the part about his Republican Party affiliation being a huge impediment in his state - like a scarlet "R"), but the criticism from the right on immigration and the support for the stem cell research veto makes me think DeWine. Also, w/ Taft, Ney, Noe et al in Ohio, DeWine could find his Republican Party affiliation bad news too. In both Ohio and Rhode Island, the preznit is highly unpopular of course - but I think he's MOST unpopular in RI.
If this column is honest and not just another Milbank snark, I think it makes the anonymous Repub look silly and cowardly. Either come right and criticize or don't. But to anonymously criticize? Silly and unhelpful.
The more I think about the clues, the more I think it's DeWine. Boy, his internal polls must really be scary for him to feel the need to do this.

Oops, egg on my face, the guy's a candidate, not a sitting senator. Then I think it's probably Tom Kean Jr. Either way, he's still a coward and awfully desperate.

I just read it quick and thought it was a sitting senator as well.
And I think Kean is a great guess. In a state where Bush is very unpopular and with enough pull to draw 9 washington reporters to a lunch with no official story.

Is it a general tendency for those on the right to claim anonymity?
It seems so, which doesn’t say much for their faith in their own beliefs.

I would say it's a general tendency when things are going badly, and right now, things are going badly on the right.

So let's see, first Michael Steele compares stem cell research to Nazi experiments on Jews during the Holocaust, then he criticzes preznit and party without having the guts to do it on the record - I'd say this guy's just about done, wouldn't you? Both Cardin and Mfume outpoll him already and I can't imagine these statements are going to help Steele close the gap.
