If the Dems can't win with this.....

It may bruise some of their own, but the oil companies and Republicans have just handed the Democrats a huge club to swing for the 2006 midterms.
Eighty four percent of the $8.6 million oil and gas companies have contributed to the 2006 elections has gone to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

I should be seeing television ads on this tomorrow, and everyday for the next five and a half months. (Here's the charts/graphs from CRP which I assume this story is based on. If you've never been to www.opensecrets.org, it's a great site.)

Update: Ron Nasty says in the comments, "Makes me feel better knowing all the extra I'm paying is being used for a good cause."

  • Time for another GOP name change...Grand Oil Party.

  • I think that one goes in the moveon version of the ad.

  • The problem will be that I'm sure there's some democrat incumbent who's high on the list, and as part of their "Lieberman courtesy," that may prevent them from using this.

  • I note the world wholesale prices have dropped again, by around $2 a barrel.
I often wonder if the price fluctuation doesn't reflect the need to buy back support for Bush.
Prices seem to ease when his disapproval rate spikes.
That works for an industry wanting to protect it's investment.

  • Maybe, but the main suppliers aren't really going to help him out, Saudi, Russia, Venezuela. Nigeria would but can't right now.

The only possibility would be the oil companies, but the way they do JIT, I don't think it's too likely.

If I were just guessing, I would say that it's probably from the turning down of the Iran rhetoric from both sides.

  • Funny, Ron, I hadn't thought of that.

  • Same ol, same ol. Most of the Dems seem absolutely determined to roll over and let the Republicans off the hook time after time. Or in the case of things like the bankruptcy bill and the war and Medicare reform, the Dems actually help 'em. What we need is a radical bloodless revolution, and we aint gonna get it until we all stand up and DEMAND that the Dems get off their ass and grow a spine and take the country back.

I have an idea. Letters. On paper. I must have sigened a dozen online petitions to fix this or that environmental outrage or to stop the torture in the last 60 days.

But what if we started writing our Congressional representatives letters. On paper. There's a thought. This might be such a rarity that they might actually read them on the premise that if we took that much trouble to WRITE the letters, they might be interested enough to READ them.

I think I will begin doing this.

  • I do, or at least I used to write letters, by hand. My problem is, I don't really have a Dem to write to. My Congressman was like the third on the "votes with Delay" list, and my senators are my state's shame Senator John Cornyn, and the lady at the top of this list, Kay Baily Hutchison. And out of district letters just don't have the impact. I wrote Cornyn's office back when torture was the topic, and got back a form letter thanking me for my support of Senator Cornyn.

(And just curious about the use of the woord bloodless. did that flow in the normal writing or was that a careful inclusion because you didn't know who might be listening. just kinda curious.
