Sellout McCain

In mid-February, McCain traveled to South Carolina to try to woo the Bush supporters who funded the sleeze campaign that tanked his 2000 presidential bid.

I'm guessing he passed muster, because shortly afterwards, he makes a deal for the Bush donor list.

And now, he hires the political director from the Bush 2004 reelection campaign.

Oh, yeah. Sellout McCain is a Maverick.

Three thoughts.
  1. I just wonder what kind of deal Bush got out of him for all this support.
  2. I find it interesting that Bush chose McCain over a fundie-right darling.
  3. Notice that shortly after the donors list was given to McCain, Frist's Senate went crazy over Dubai Ports.

  • Now he's hired the political director from the Bush '04 re-election campaign??? Good gravy!!!

    He IS a sellout.

  • I told ya. I just wonder what McCain's soul will go for when Bush transfers it to Satan.

  • I have never been able to figure McCain out. At times I thought he was the heir to the Jack Kemp/ Steve Forbes moderate Republican faction that seems to be dead.

Then he will say something that reminds me why I haven't looked to the GOP for answers in quite a few years.

  • McCain is about pure ambition.

Let me remind everybody that the second most dangerous place to be in Washington is between a camera and Chuck Schumer. The most dangerous place? Between a camera and John McCain.

McCain wants to be president and he is willing to do ANYTHING in order to win - even to deal with the same guys who ran a whisper campaign against his adopted daughter (called a "black baby") and wife (called a "drug addict".)

What kind of man would make a deal with people after they smeared his wife and child?

I used to like McCain too. But having watched him pretty closely since 2000, I have come to realize that McCain's "maverick" status was more about setting himself apart from the rest of the party and getting to glorify in all the media adulation, first as part of the "Straight Talk" Express tour in 2000 and then on all the cable and Sunday shows.

Watch how Tweety, Imus, Dobbs and the rest cream all over themselves to suck up to McCain, call him an American hero, a rare "honest" politician, etc.

You think McCain didn't figure his alleged "maverick" status wasn't a great way to get press, stick out from the rest of the GOP crowd, etc.? I do. I think he's that calculating.

And as for his alleged "honesty," which the media chowhounds are always touting, let's remember that McCain should have gotten his crooked ass voted out of office after he was implicated in the S & L scandals of the 80's. McCain may have learned from that scandal how to "appear" honest and upstanding and talk the talk about "reform" but as we can see from his current deals with Bush and Bush's money people, McCain would sell out in seconds in order to be preznit, including his long-standing positions on "reform."

Our only hope in killing McCain's campaign is for the wingnuts like Drudge to do him in w/ a mud campaign. If that wingnut bio coming out on him that alleges rampant sexual infidelities, gambling problems and anger management issues is any indication, there are plenty of people on the right willing to do him dirt just like 2000 no matter what kind of deal McCain has made with Bush.

Which is ultimately good for people who want to see a democrat elected in 2008.

  • I wonder if McCain is their pick in case Cheney decides to step down for health reasons(he's just sick about all the money he could be making at Halliburton)as is the rumor. If not, and the Democrats make major gains in the upcoming election, 2008 could be the year when the Republicans implode.

  • Lew, that's an interesting guess. That might well be a part of this bargain. But, I think if they're going to do this, they have to wait til the poll numbers go up(?) .

Historymike, I am a burned McCain supporter from 2000. It's interestinmg how his "values" have shifted from 2000 to now. Course, I think he may just be hitting the fundie side just to get money and organizational support early, and then he'll track back to the middle.

As Reality Based points out in that great comment. McCain has become all about McCain.

I think he perceives the mistake he made in 2000 was being too "honest" and not conniving enough. It doesn't look like a mistake he intends to make again.

I'll bet he's got them prepping the anti-Frist smears right now.

  • They need each other right now. Bush will only have a year left in office, assuming he's still president, by the time McCain is running.

I don't think Bush will do much for him then; and even if he did, he might not even be an asset. He may have not only sold out his daughter but bet on the wrong horse. Which will make the pain of his defeat that much more intense.

    More freakish Condy pics, please!
