Negroponte's working hard to keep us safe.

It's good to know that the Director of National Intelligence is so focused on keeping me safe.

On many a workday lunchtime, the nominal boss of U.S. intelligence, John D. Negroponte, can be found at a private club in downtown Washington, getting a massage, taking a swim, and having lunch, followed by a good cigar and a perusal of the daily papers in the club’s library.

“He spends three hours there [every] Monday through Friday,” gripes a senior counterterrorism official, noting that the former ambassador has a security detail sitting outside all that time in chase cars.

Also, remember that Negroponte is now the day to day briefer for Bush on intel matters with Porter Goss being relegated to appointment only status.

  • Negroponte aint a nice guy. He helped train and equip rebels while he was ambassador to Honduras. Many people were taken from their homes and off the streets in Nicaragua (Saddam style) under Negroponte's direction. The people of the region regard him as a war criminal. (note: I served in the US military during that time, and while I was in Honduras conducted security for weapons headed for Nicaragua

  • Yeah, Negroponte's history is just awful, and it was US policy in Central America in the eighties that brought me to political awareness. There's fair reason to believe that he was sent to Iraq to implement the 'Salvador Option' training militia death squads in Iraq like he did there.

And, Leslie, yeah, that was a really strange episode when Porter Goss was semi publicly uninvited to the daily briefings which had been under the CIA for so long. Technically, Negroponte is supposed to be gathering intel from all the different outfits, but six months ago there were only two people in the "information sharing" office.

And there's good evidence that the Pentagon (85% of intel funding) is not talking to him at all.
