A question of priorities

Why is it when the matter of social programs are brought up, Republicans talk about not wanting to just "throw money at the problem," and yet when the issue is defense or terrorism, that is all they want to do?

No matter what you think of the state of our educational programs, as example, they have performed far better than our intelligence agencies did on, and prior to, Sept. 11, or in Iraq. And yet, teachers are told by this administration to accept accountability while the intel structure has not even suffered a single demotion and has had increased budgets for its absolute failure in the last five years.

Medicare is cut to eliminate waste in the system, while the Pentagon lost track of assets worth 1.3 trillion dollars.

It's just wrong.

  • It's absolutely morally wrong in my opinion. I just linked to this post after reading that DeVos (billionaire GOP nominee for governor) would like to see certain parts of Medicaid killed if he becomes governor.

We're talking health care that benefits children, elderly and disabled people. How are they supposed to help themselves for God's sake? And people like DeVos call themselves Christians?

  • Don't you know that the bleeding of ailing social programs is thereputic. It was very popular is the middle ages. You know, the time where our leaders minds are.

  • If I'm particularly cynical about this, I would mention that the money going to defense contractors ends up largely in the pockets of the Repubs.

Or, Perhaps there's an intentional effort. During Gingrich's heyday, there was underground talk at some of the thinktanks, that balanced budgets would never allow cuts in social welfare programs that the Repubs despise, and that the only way to do it, was to "starve the beast" through a combination of tax cuts and deficit spending so that social programs would have to be cut.

And then, of course, there's the obvious. Poor people don't have lobbyists.
