The whole US political scene -- from pundits to pols to the electorate -- is an exercise in surreal insanity. There seems to be no consequences for lying, or flying in the face of reason.
But in the real world there are real consequences. Eventually we'll pay the price for having our heads in the sand and pretending that special rules apply to us... just because we're American's, damnit.
The inertia of past greatness will only get you so far... And then gravity will kick in.
