Colin Powell

For whatever reason, Colin Powell is hugely respected by the media in a way that perhaps no other political figure is.

When he talks, he is given huge credibility.

His "firing back" to Cheney gets big coverage everywhere. AP, Reuters, NYTimes, WaPo, Bloomberg, LATimes, Politico, etc., etc.....

Kinda interesting when you think about it. He's like "the villagers'" favorite.

  • I'm glad somebody with horsepower is taking on Cheney. Not that it will matter.

Here is a Powell story that makes me wonder why the media trusts him so much:

  • There are a fair number of reasons to wonder why Powell gets the incredible credibility and weight he does. That's why this press incident so fascinated me.

I think it's that he plays the Washington insiders, social scene, and his persona so well.

  • he's sorta the non-crazy Republican, in that the only real position he's taken is also one that he's recanted.

maybe he'll be their chosen candidate in future. he's got it all: good-looking, credible, thoughtful, and not one of those darn Democrats.

  • No. He'll never be the Republican standard bearer because all of those who do not get such treatment from the media resent him for it.

Plus, he's moderate and black, neither of which would win a GOP primary.

  • I think Americans give Powell a slide they don't Cheney.

Powell did his dirty deed in loyalty to his President like a good soldier, Cheney's motives were a little more evil.

Just my opinion, no evidence to back it up.

  • Agreed relative to Cheney, but Powell also gets that level of credibility always.

Look back to when he was used for that UN propaganda speech. His unquestioned credibility was the reason they used him.

  • Of course, and that's where Powell lost his credibility.
Powell in April 2006 admitted he knew the information he gave in that speech was wrong.
Americans see him as one of the only people in the Bush administration who has admitted a wrong, not that they let him off, he has no real political future.
Yet, the American people and the press will believe him over Cheney.
