probably a stupid question...but how does a mask prevent spread...does the virus get caught in the fabric and die? couldn't the virus enter through eye membranes? or is it primarily to keep people from exhaling possible virus'?

It doesn't really. Virus particles are so small they pass through almost all the medical (cloth) surgery masks, and most of the commercial/industrial masks.
(And that assumes the people know how to properly fit them which they don't.)
In operating rooms, they are used to deflect the breath. they don't stop stuff coming out, but they keep the surgeon from blowing into a wound.
Really, unless you're properly fitted and know how to use repiratory stuff, it's marginally effective.
I thinkl it's more about people wanting to feel like they're doing something.
