The WaPo has a story on on this woman, Susan Boyle, who went on "Britain's Got Talent." She's 47, very unattractive, and the entire crowd was laughing at her. And then she sang. And it was glorious.

From 2007 - Paul Potts on the same show. This piece still brings tears to my eyes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA
From 2008 - Andrew Johnston on the show. He's from a 'council estate'. Like living in Cabrini Green - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Q9Ckra6vY
I don't mean to hijack your post but that show has got REAL talent unlike "American Idol".

Yeah. I've seen some of the older ones and they are pretty good, but this one just caught me.
Maybe it's the ugly duckling thing.

From what's been said she's spent her life looking after her mother and I guess she has some cognitive issues. Without any training she has perfectly performed that piece with flawless affect and precision that was organic and not mechanical like a trained singer.
I played the other performers for my wife and she liked Susan the best because "she's much more accessible". I think that's what is really grabbing people about her.

Yeah. Like I said, I think it's the ugly duckling thing. That she's so obviously from outside.
And that she's 47, it hits the dream almost lost.
