With all the sudden focus on violence in Mexico, I think it's important to note that marijuana is the top revenue generator for the Mexican drug cartels.

Of course. In a recent MSNBC special, street sales of marijuana in the U.S. topped revenue generated by corn, officially listed as the #1 cash crop in the States.

You know, that doesn't surprise me so much, at least in amount sold.
If you mean that mj grown in the US, that would be a bit more surprising.
Of course, dollars per acre farmed is huge for mj since pretty much the whole plant is sold for big dollars/lb.
Back to the post, I just found it amazing that the drug cartels are running on mj.

Over the next several years (and hopefully not decades...), I want to be witnessing the return of marijuana / hemp to the list of legal cash crops in the US.
I look forward to a day when paper, which now comes from slow-growing trees, is provided by quick-growing hemp fiber.

For me, it's the legal, imprisonment and police costs of marijuana policy. If you want to keep it illegal, make small amounts a ticket and fine. That would save billions and let the police and courts spend their time on more important stuff.
