Obama's support

One striking feature of recent polls is the breadth and strength of Obama's support among Americans ages 50 to 64, arguably the people most hurt by the stock market's nosedive. In the most recent Gallup Poll, the president's approval rating among those in this age group was higher than ever -- 65 percent -- and was second only to his support among the youngest voters. In the latest Cook/RT survey, Obama's backing among the 50-to-64 set was 68 percent, the highest of any age group. And 47 percent strongly approved of his performance -- again, the highest of any age group.

    This is total hand-wringing nonsense. 60/26 is great!

    "Popularity in the 55-to-60 percent range is much more likely in the coming months."

    Oh no! Will the Republicans abandon Obama? That is the essential thrust of the article.

    I recall when Bush dropped to 40% in polling, the punditry and GOP called that "pretty good". it wasn't, but it's sure worse than 55%.

    Anyway, Obama's putative future decline is not necessarily the Republican's rise. Disbelief in Obama does not automatically translate to support of Ayn Rand, birther BS, or social conservatism. The GOP is simply not in any reasonable position to capture any putatively-disillusioned Obama supporters. Minorities, for example, are off the metaphorical table. Democrats may be deprived of "coat-tails" to some extent, but if Republican candidates are all from the crazy fringe, then that matters less. We just end up with a "D" column win with reduced enthusiasm - except in those few "red" states.

  • I clipped this because I thought it was interesting that those most focused on their retirement funds evaporating had the highest approval of Obama. Especially interesting as this was one of his weaker demographics in the election.

    And I'm certainly not buying into chasing Obama's approval number. If you're in that 60 neighborhood, you're golden, as that's all your party and a majority of independents.

    Especially in this economy, that's pretty damn good. It looks to me like we are seeing an additional single-digit percentage of Republicans buy into the spin that the economy is Obama's fault.
