Obama says, "Pass my imperfect bill"

I found this a really interesting way to go at this. Obama tore at parts of the Stimulus bill (and the Congressional process) in a very familiar way in front of a very friendly audience today in Elkhart to create an odd but compelling case for the bill.
Now I'm not going to tell you that this bill is perfect. It isn't. But it is the right size, the right scope, and has the right priorities to create jobs that will jumpstart our economy and transform it for the twenty-first century.

I also can't tell you with one hundred percent certainty that everything in this plan will work exactly as we hope. But I can tell you with complete confidence that endless delay or paralysis in Washington in the face of this crisis will bring only deepening disaster.

We've had a good debate. Now it's time to act.

(He knows the bill will be mostly rebuilt when it reaches the conference process. This is about the politics of getting votes, not defining the details.)

  • "...in front of a friendly audience..."

i would add NATURALLY friendly audience. My understanding is the audience wasn't screened and this wasn't a staged propaganda production a la Bush and his hand picked attendees and Reich-craft events.

For a guy who's electoral competitors claimed was wet behind the ears and not ready for "day one," he's proving to be a formidable politician. We'll see how all this plays out in the conference process, but still... Obama seems to be playing the long game in a town where everyone is only focused on the next news cycle. It's interesting, if also stomach churning, to see this new process play out.

  • My understanding was they gave away tickets and it was "sold out" very, very quickly, although I don't know who organized it locally.

And, yeah, anywhere the Obama folks put up a shingle, they'd likely get a friendly audience.

I wasn't trying to imply shenanigans, just noting that this type of rhetorical tactic would probably work far better with a friendly crowd.

And, yeah, other than giving away a few targets on vetting, they're doing just fine.
