Thought

Palestinian suffering, and the world outrage at that suffering, is Hamas' best weapon.

  • It would be if Israel cared about world opinion.

  • I get your point, but to some degree they do.

  • Does Israel care about world opinion, or how world opinion may mute the US's aggressive, blind support of Israel.

Does Russia care about world opinion? Syria? Iran? ... The US. To some degree they all do. But...

  • I think the only opinion Israel really cares about is that of the US Congress, so it can keep getting our $2 or $3 billion a year. Taking that away, or even threatening to, would get their attention pretty quickly.

  • Bad PR for Israel is Hamas' best weapon. That doesn't necessarily mean it is a highly effective weapon, but it is their best weapon.

For decades, the one-way alliance between Israel and the U.S. has cost one side of that alliance an astronomical amount of money, credibility, goodwill, and political capital.

Israel, the putative beacon of democracy and freedom, has backed some of the most horrible regimes in the world - ones that we wouldn't even touch on our worst day - for money and money alone. Who protected Idi Amin until the bitter end? Israel. Who offered arms and "advisers" to Guatemala after America recoiled in horror at Holocaust-sized massacres of the Mayans? Israel. The list goes on, and none of these cases involve "self-defence".

Israel has made a policy of making us look like thugs by association with them, and they did nothing to aid us militarily in either Gulf War. In fact, they spy on us and engage in such such strong political influence that, if any other country did it, would amount to foreign agents guilty of treason.

And now it is America who is the primary (almost sole) defender of Israel's actions. When Saddam scoffed at UN resolutions and sanctions it was "proof" that the world was against him, but when Israel does the exact same thing it is brave and misunderstood.

  • First, YES, Israel cares about world opinion. Yes, US protection matters, but they do care.

It matters in their broader efforts against Iran. It matters to their commercial interests.

However, I'm believing more and more that this is a good part about their election.

  • I thought I posted a follow up comment, but I don't see it here.

I meant to point out that it's Hamas who really doesn't care about international opinion. Much in the same way N. Korea doesn't care. Though they are both interested in manipulating international sympathy.

I would put Israel somewhere between the US and Russian when it comes to respecting world opinion.

I don't think Israel is a rogue nation, but I do think their violent, disproportional military actions in this case are rogue acts.

  • Israel does put a lot of effort into public relations so I guess they do care about world opinion.

  • EPM, very true. I don't know if you remember a post I put up awhile back warning about Hamas' good PR arm.

That definitely doesn't mean that Palestinians aren't being harmed, but they are good at playing it.

The premise is to provoke action and then benefit off the response. Kinda like Gandhi, but without the whole non-violence thing.

    ....

Anon, they do. It matters. They're willing to take some hits, but there is concern on their side.
