Republican politics - Lessons not learned
With all the other stuff going on, I've kinda lost track of the internal Republican fallout from the election.
(CNN) Mike Duncan will seek a new term as RNC chair. (There are several other viable contenders, but you gotta figure Duncan probably has a good "whip count" of the votes and wouldn't be running again if he thought he couldn't win.)
In the Congress, you've got Boehner still in control and consolidating power, and Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell stands unchallenged.
So, Republicans came through this landslide election, and it now appears their national leadership may remain entirely intact.
If that happens, it's pretty unbelievable.

It's just mindblowing to me that, after all that, they're going to keep plugging through with the same non-charismatic leadership.
Who among those would get me inspired, would make me want to follow?

The GOP is not about charisma it's about party loyalty and ideological commitment. OTOH the Democrats still are characterized best by Will Rogers statement "I'm not a member of any organized political party I'm a Democrat".

Is it possible they believe their own propaganda and really think their problem with the electorate is that they were douchy enough? That they have to me more obstructionist, more rigidly ideological, more perniciously pro-business and more anti-working American?
One wonders where we go from here, when one party is so hostile toward government and responsible governance and so blindly obsessed with power and control.

Matt, that's true about the Republicans, but probably their best way out is to find that new leader/mouthpiece. No matter how well they "find new ideas" or repackage, without someone good out front to sell that, they'll have a hard time coming back.
....
EPM, I don't know about that, but McConnell and a couple of Repub Senators were talking about putting a hold (filibuster) on the auto bailout last night.
(And there is a school of thought held by all three of these guys, Duncan, Boehner, and McConnell, that their ideas are just fine, they just didn't do their tactics well enough.)

...besides, they already have a scapegoat and target for blame, and he leaves office next month.
The RNC is all about hoary eminences.

Yeah, I get that, but I just can't see any of these three leading the party to resurgence for the 2010 midterms.

Someone on this blog said something about the GOP hunkering down and getting even more aggressive because of their losses. It's like they weren't tough enough. They'll end up even further alienated from the middle. 2010 and 2012 will be a banner year for SNL GOP spoofs.

I don't know, you need recognizable headliners for spoofs, and these guys aren't.
The further you are from celebrity, the more outrageous the things you have to say to get spoofed.
