  • Unrelated personal note:

Temps moderated on Monday... from the single digits on Saturday night to the high 50's today. We're borrowing a generator from my in-laws' neighbor who's in Florida for several weeks. I wired it in to my breaker panel last night and we now have heat, lights and water. Wooo Hooo! The toilets flush!

We're still being told not to expect power and phone until "the end of the week" at best. The damage was widespread, with the Mondanock Region (south-western NH) getting the brunt of the damage.

PSNH, New Hampshire's largest electric utility, reported a peak of 320,000 customers without power. That's over three times the next largest outage in NH history (98,000). According to their spokesman on the radio this morning, there are still around 140,000 customers without power.

Our neighbor's down the road were great to let my family spend that cold, cold Saturday night with them, but it's nice to be in my own home.

  • Cool. You're back home. That makes a difference.

And, here's hoping your outage involves alot of people. The larger the group affected, the faster you come back on.

(Having unfortunately just been through a hurricane, I have a tighter knowledge of the prioritization process.)

  • My situation has been reduced to a mere pain in the butt. The temperature is expected to go back below freezing during the daytime beginning tomorrow, or Wednesday (depending on who's reporting the weather) and they're reporting rain/snow throughout the week. I'm afraid that will slow down the repair effort. Well, at least I'm not the guy freezing his fingers off in the cherry picker!

The generator is fine and all, but at $20/day in gasoline, it can add up. Merry Christmas, kids.

  • On the bright side, that linesman is probably making at least time and a half coming into Christmas.....

  • I thought of that. And, yes, it is a bright side as far as I'm concerned. The electrical workers have good union jobs. No so much for the working stiffs doing the tree work and clearing the branches, I'm afraid. Still, I suppose their making time and a half. And that's gotta be a welcome thing to anyone looking ahead to a New England winter... even if fuel prices are down a bit right now.
