Born at the Crest of the Empire

For once, maybe a short historical memory might be a good thing.

I can't tell you how many times I've been astonished as the Bush administration or the media has rewritten the history of the last few years without anyone seeming to notice, but, thinking about it, maybe I've found a bright spot in our short historical memory.

Maybe, just maybe, our inability to remember what took place just days, weeks, or months ago might free up consumer spending just a little bit earlier than otherwise.

Because we want to spend, don't we.... if we could just get rid of those nasty intruding reminders of reality.....

(Not much going on today, so I'm throwing out random stuff.)

  • What I feel is the 'barrage effect' the GOP has rewritten so many outcomes and perspectives and they've gotten traction in the media that I don't even bother to watch in MSM. As far as water cooler talk, who cares.

  • But it's not just the GOP. The media falls into it, too.

And my tiny glimmer of cynical hope here is that the American people will forget....

  • The media repeats the loudest talking points, ergo the GOP re-visioning is what is stenographers, er, journalists regurgitate. There's very little independent investigation.... AP and other wire services are used so extensively, that a single source, now repeated in 20 outlets, gives the illusion of 20 sources.

Oh, there are exceptions, but they are dismissed as fringe or liberal hacks. And they're usually print (McClatchy) media which no one reads. It's the beautifully coiffed talking heads are what really sets the public vision... by and large.

  • Yeah, I get it. But my point is that maybe that willingness to not dig for reality might shorten the consumer spending fears.

  • ... so the process of irresponsible consumption can resume.

  • It's like the auto bailout. We need it now. We can address the problem later, when we're on a little better footing.
