On the suspension "gimmick"

Thinking about it overnight, I think the "campaign suspension" went too far. I think if McCain had said he was leaving the trail for a few days to focus on the problem, and even if he'd hinted at postponing the debate, it might have worked.

But to my mind, the confrontational nature of "suspending the campaign" went too far. It injected his campaign interests into the consideration of his actions. It changed the move from an impression of earnestness into a political ploy.

  • I agree. Politics pure and simple. He should have just proposed a suspension.

  • Right.

Or maybe not. I think a statement that he was leaving the campaign trail would have been more effective.

    Definitely something softer.

  • Good point Mike. But it's classic McCain to overreact. To go to an extreme when a lighter hand would have been better. Bomb Iran... Possible nuclear war with Russia over Georgia... Insisting the economy is fundamentally strong... Insisting the economy is headed into a 1930's like death spiral.

Is part of the problem -- as Letterman pointed out -- that McCain is hobbled by Palin? A postergirl for the fringe, but a nightmare to everyone else and this cannot be let loose?

  • Yeah. I think that's part of why he's getting blasted.

If he'd done this in a serious way, it would feel very different.

But, that's not who he is.

  • My question would be why did John McCain wait until the mess grew so big before he decided to take action on it?

  • Because it got so much worse from Tuesday to Wednesday. They were about to come to a deal, and his deregulatory problems were still being blamed for the failure.
