Equilibrium

From a WaPo/Q polling article on Mi, Wis, Co, and Minn.
While McCain's pick of Palin -- and the resultant flood of press coverage -- was painted as a game-changing moment in the campaign, there is little evidence that the Alaska governor has fundamentally altered the contest.

Yup.

  • ... And the very real trauma of current events has help push the superficial drama of Palin to the back burner.

I still say that to the extent her selection affects the election, it's a net drag on McCain.

  • There's some polling to support that. I don't have it at my fingertips, but it's out there.

The two counters are that she's brought desperately needed volunteers (and some money,) and that she did give him a desperately needed ()temporary) narrative changing bump.

If he'd come out of the conventions immediately where he was, the race would have been called over. The bounce bought him a suspension of the "tight race" narrative.
