While McCain's pick of Palin -- and the resultant flood of press coverage -- was painted as a game-changing moment in the campaign, there is little evidence that the Alaska governor has fundamentally altered the contest.

... And the very real trauma of current events has help push the superficial drama of Palin to the back burner.
I still say that to the extent her selection affects the election, it's a net drag on McCain.

There's some polling to support that. I don't have it at my fingertips, but it's out there.
The two counters are that she's brought desperately needed volunteers (and some money,) and that she did give him a desperately needed ()temporary) narrative changing bump.
If he'd come out of the conventions immediately where he was, the race would have been called over. The bounce bought him a suspension of the "tight race" narrative.
