Obama cuts ad spending in red states?

I'm going to wait and see on this one, but it could mark a shift in stance and strategy.

  • First off, I regard this story as suspect, as it appears you do.

Second, the ground efforts in many of these states have been in operation for months. It's possible that the campaign has gained enough data that the Obama campaign is making an informed decision and waiting until McCain has less money after the Convention.

Third, I am really beginning to despise the people dismissing "traditional red states" as a waste of money. Democrats haven't made a serious effort in these states since the '60's, and the GOP has. Things could very well have changed in the past 40 years. Until somebody tries, we'll never really know and we'll spend eternity locked in the 2000 electoral map. It reminds me of the Simpsons where Ned's beatnik parents whine "we've tried nothin', and we're out of ideas".

  • I'm generally an enthusiast for the 50 state strategy (although I really think we're talking 37 or so.) The longer term benefits in Congressional and local offices and gains in power will trickle up.

Frankly, 50 state hasn't really been an option in the recent past with the Repubs tradtionally outraising 3:2 or whatever, but, if you've got the money, it's a good investment.

And, You make a very good point about the ground operations in these states. They're there and being paid for, so a blip in ads probably doesn't mean much.

I'd also offer that there may be some sort of new theme coming out of the convention and they may be sitting on the ad money and just waiting a week.
