McCain's efforts to steal spotlight

McCain is scheduling "large scale" rallies to announce his VP selection on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri.) They may be as big as 10,000. (Wow. 10,000.)

And, it looks like Romney.

Later: (FirstRead) The Obama/Biden bus is going to start Saturday in Pennsylvania, and then head to Ohio and Michigan.

  • A) Will he really steal the spotlight? Sure the gaggle will report, but surely this doesn't hold a candle to the Obama selection suspense. Does McCain risk looking small (again) as he does his little me-too "rally"?

    B) Romney? Seriously? I don't see it, but than again I'm apparently not the target demo. Will the press talk about all that primary bad blood? Probably not so much since, unlike Hillary, he dropped out at a respectable time (one might say TOO early, even)

You know I think Romney is a political shark with no particular ethical compass. I just don't know who warms up to him. The puritan wing of the GOP, maybe. But that wing might have problems with him being a member of an heretical cult.

  • I agree. It was intended to be a bit sarcastic. Like the reporting last week that the McCain folks were trying to "build a crowd" of 10,000 in Ohio whereas Obama could draw 10,000 without really trying.

And as for Romney, he's the smart choice, the "non-gamble" choice. He's the shortlister the least disliked across the GOP spectrum.

They like Pawlenty, but they really can't attack Obama on experience if they stick him as VP with a 72-76 year old president.

  • Romney: The least disliked across the GOP spectrum.

Wow. That's a rousing endorsement! Like being the least offensive body oder. lol

He still has that patrician stiffness that plagued Kerry. The man just doesn't do "cool." I suppose the media will see him as filling the economic intelligence gap in McCain's CV, but they'll still report him as being stiff, detached, calculating....

What is the demographic Romney brings to McCain that isn't already leaning McCain anyway? The youth vote? Women? So, yeah, he's the safe choice in that he doesn't alienate any MORE of the GOP than is already disaffected, but who does he bring in.

And I still say it's a tough call on how the Fundis will react to a Romney VP.

  • Well, that's pretty much where he is.

And, don't think of it in the affirmative, think of it in the negative. Jindal, Pawlenty, Palin, too inexperienced to keep using the argument against Obama.

Giuliani, Lieberman, Ridge, hated by the religious right for pro-life.

McCain himself is not likely to take a religious right candidate.

There's no one else out there that's better. And, Romney will play attack dog without conscience.

  • So, like McCain himself, Romney becomes the VP candidate by default... because he's the only one left standing. How poetic.

  • Yeah, That's assuming he makes the safe choice.
