What is it about Russia?

Why is McCain so anti-Russia, and yet so pro-Chinese?

He's proposed that wacky-assed "league of democracies" solely intended to target Russia. During his stint leading the IRI, he channeled tons of funding into anti-Russian opposition groups in the former Soviet States.

Why does McCain hate Russia so much?

As he's running for president, we really should know.

  • The "League of Democracies" is an idea that is long overdue. The UN's legitimacy has always been dilluted by the fact that a large proportion of its members are dictatorships.

Also, considering the lingering threat of Russian imperialism against the Soviet states, helping these states keep the empire out is wise.

  • But what moral legitimacy would it have? It would be perceived as a US puppet.

  • I don't know if it helps but this article puts a lot of credit/blame on Scheuneman.

  • I'll check it out, but yeah, the neocons came out of extreme anti-Commie, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

  • McCain is a regular ol' conservative, not a neocon. I'm not aware of the actual neocons being involved.

  • I don't think they've forgiven Putin for taking the oil industry back from the oligarchs.

  • Oh yeah, certainly/ McCain isn't a neocon (although he definitely advocates a more muscular use of the military to advance diplomacy. But that's not really neocon, just hawkish.

What I was trying to say is that Scheuneman is a neocon, and he seems to be writing the policy.

Sorry for the shorthand. It was sloppy writing.

(And oil's a good guess, but I also wouldn't rule out the more personal. The apparent poisoning of Yushenko who McCain was dealing with and supporting, and the Litvenenko (spelling?) poisoning.)

Then again, China kills people in the town square. Of course, McCain didn't know any of them.

  • The Russian oil industry has been taken by different oligarchs.

The fact that China won't recognize Taiwan as a separate nation (which it is and has been for decades) in the Olympics should be reason enough to disqualify it. The Olympics are to be for international cooperation, and China should have set aside its hatred for Taiwan at least just during the games.

  • Realist, If we're throwing around beefs, I would say China's nearly blind support of the Sudanese government.

By Blogger mikevotes, at 9:00 PM

  • It's a beef alright, but not related to China refusing to allow a country to participate as a full partner in the Olympics.

  • Well, I don't know.Pumping millions of dollars in support and offering UN security council cover as a government undertakes massive violence against an ethnic group, violence sever enough that many, including the president, are calling it genocide?

By Blogger mikevotes, at 6:12 AM

  • All true. A different point than mine, but yours is more serious, so I accept the topic change. "Genocide in the Sudan" is much worse than calling Taiwan funny names.

  • Just so you know, I'm abandoning this thread. I generally watch them for about a day.
