The secret of the RNC fundraising advantage? Closed Bush fundraisers.

There's the well reported financial gap between the DNC and RNC, (DNC 5 million on hand, RNC 40 million,) but here's the secret.
The 20-minute speech was a relatively rare public fundraising event for Bush, whose 29 GOP fundraisers this year have generally been held inside private homes.

In those 29 "private home" fundraisers, how much has George Bush raised for the RNC? Between $750,000 and $1.5 million a pop? Plus Cheney's dozen or so?

That pretty much accounts for almost all of the DNC/RNC fundraising gap.

  • It also accounts for the RNC taking de facto control over McCain's campaign and the end of the "maverick".

McCain is now completely reliant on the people who gave us Bush and Cheney, and the whole neocon vision.

Also, it's important to note that these fundraising numbers are relatively low by GOP standards, and that we aren't seeing similar numbers in the down ticket campaigns (House and Senate). In effect, the GOP is betting the farm on McCain and the Executive Office. And, curiously, they are requiring him to fall into line with the policies that have brought Bush to staggering levels of unpopularity.

The GOP has fallen victim to its own echo chamber.

  • You know, he always was going to be. In many ways, he's a weak politician who has run two poorly managed campaigns, 200, and 2008. The pros were always going to come in.

As for the fundraising, I think that's the story of the cycle. eight years ago the hope was for the Dem to raise 2/3 of the GOP, and now that's totally reversed.

  • Does the private fundraising become an issues? Is it framed as "secret" fundraising and portrayed as nefarious?
