I had a dog once. He was a great dog. He could hunt, do tricks, and was just a lovable, loyal ol' mut. The kids would play with him and he'd take it all in stride.
But as he got older he started to have problems -- hips, eye-sight -- and generally was off a beat or two. Eventually, the ol' boy just got mean. Couldn't trust him around the new kids in the house. He started snapping at them unpredictablity. Wouldn't know what would set this normally friendly dog off. We finally had to put him down.
Sad really.
